Workers' comp for electrical contractors
Coverage for inside wiremen and service electricians, billed with payroll, with benefits to keep your licensed people.
Your class code
Electrical wiring inside buildings usually falls under class 5190. That covers residential and commercial wiring, panel work, service calls, and generator installs. Low-voltage, alarm, and outside line work can fall under different codes. Office staff go on a clerical code if they stay off job sites.
What we don't quote
We don't place utility line or pole work, or any crew that climbs poles as part of the job. If you do a little of it, tell us during your quote and we'll be straight about whether our partners will write you.
Florida rules for electricians
Electrical work is construction under Florida's comp law. Coverage starts with your first employee, owners count unless exempt, and no more than three officers can file exemptions. Permits require proof of coverage.
Storm work and pay-as-you-go
After a storm, generator installs and service calls can double your crew for a few months. Comp through a PEO is figured on each payroll, so premium follows the crew you have, and you don't get a big audit bill for the extra hands in the fall.
Keeping licensed electricians
Health insurance and a 401(k) are often what keeps a journeyman from leaving for a bigger company. How benefits work through a PEO.
What to have ready
- Headcount and last year's payroll, split between field and office
- Your current declarations page, if you have a policy
- Loss runs for the last 3 to 5 years
- Which subs you use, and whether they carry comp
None of it is needed to start a quote.
Questions
Do you quote solar installers?
Solar work usually involves roof work, which our partners don't write. Ground-mount only crews can ask.
Do generator installs change my code?
Not usually. Generator installs and transfer switches typically stay under the electrical wiring code.
Find out what your crew would pay
