Workers' comp for pool service and construction
Coverage for service routes and pool builders, billed with payroll, with benefits to keep reliable techs.
Service and construction are coded differently
Pool cleaning and service routes and new pool construction usually carry different class codes, with construction rated higher. If you do both, keep the payroll split clean. A tech who only runs a service route shouldn't be priced like a builder.
Florida rules
Pool construction is construction under Florida's comp law, which means coverage from the first employee. Pool service companies may fall under the non-construction rules, which require coverage at four employees. Builders also need proof of coverage to pull permits.
Busy season, slow season
Service routes along the Emerald Coast get busy when the rental and tourist season starts, then slow down. Comp through a PEO is figured on each payroll, so premium tracks how many techs you're actually running.
Keeping route techs
A tech who knows your customers and shows up every week is worth more than a new hire. Benefits through a PEO give a small pool company something to offer besides a raise. How benefits work.
What to have ready
- Headcount and last year's payroll, split between service and construction
- Your current declarations page, if you have a policy
- Loss runs for the last 3 to 5 years
- Which subs you use, and whether they carry comp
None of it is needed to start a quote.
Questions
Do I need comp if I'm a two-person service route?
For pool service alone, Florida generally requires comp at four employees. Construction requires it from the first. Owners can often file an exemption.
Can you quote a company that does both service and builds?
Yes. We'll ask how payroll splits between the two so each part is priced correctly.
